The origin of the group dates to December of 1997 with the first rehearsals. The first premiere was on June 13 of 1998 with a public get-together in the Český Krumlov gothic winehouse of U Báby, which was also used for rehearsals. A week later the group mede its first larger performance at the Five-petalled Rose Festival. Then followed concerts, performances for private company parties, gallery openings, club evenings, and congresses. Their first media-documented performance was at the occasion of the opening of an exhibition of the Loučovice painter Fr. Tácha in the Český Krumlov town theatre in June of 1998.

Group Black Bottom

Over the five years of Black Bottom's existence, the group has played over 250 concerts, some exceptional. Among the more significant concerts are at the Egon Schiele International Art Center in Český Krumlov, the Congressional Center in Prague during the "International Summit on the Infrastructure of New Europe", in the Ambit Gallery for the World Press Foto exhibition opening, and in the renowned Lucerna in Prague. The group has earned credit not only on the domestic scene, i.e. regular concerts at the Internet Café of the Český Krumlov Castle, but at concerts in Germany and Austria as well. Visitors to Český Krumlov from around the world to Český Krumlov have enjoyed the group, as they play world-renowned pieces which are understood to all regardless of nationality.

The group's repertoire, played with alternatively five and six members over the years, is made up of pieces from the 1920's and 30's from ragtime to traditional and dixieland to the height of Glenn Miller's swing. The ageless melodies remind us of the age of prohibition in the USA, the atmosphere of gangsters in elegant clothing. The group's listeners can imagine themselves in the streets of New York and Chicago, when this music rang from nearly every bar. The group's favorite pieces include George Gershwin, Joe Garland, Irwin Berlin and many others, including Czech authors. The overall musical impression is topped off by a four-voice harmony.

Otakar Votýpka - guitar, voice, director
Ivana Řebíková - violin, voice
Luděk Štěpánek - soprano saxophone, voice
Filip Markes - alto saxophone, voice
Pavel Strnad - piano, clarinte, voice
Pavel Hoch - contrabass
